Victorian Terraced House, Hampstead,
change of use : conversion : refurbishment : extension
Our design brief was to revert the property from two duplex flats back to the original historic single-family house, to form a new rear extension with roof terrace and rear patio and to re-model the existing rear garden. Following on from the above alterations, the house was internally remodelled and overhauled.
The lower ground floor has been re-arranged and extended to form a new large kitchen, playroom and family areas, opening up to a new rear patio and the garden. The patio now connects the house with the garden through new shallow ground steps and landscaped terraced garden area. The new rear roof terrace adds to the substantial increase of outdoor recreational areas.
The new rear extension structure feature large areas of glass, which offer lightness and transparency of the new structure while retaining the dominant role of the existing building with its period masonry features. The terraces between the rear patio and the rear garden are landscaped with green foliage, enhancing the existing rear garden.
Internally, the original period features were carefully restored and any important missing elements, including the lower floor stairs, were formed anew to match. The bespoke built-in furniture of kitchen, bathrooms and wardrobes was designed in modernist style to offset and highlight the period features of the original building fabric.
To complement the transformation of the house, it was fitted with the latest technologies of underfloor heating, house electronics and efficient lighting. The original building fabric was upgraded with period double glazed windows and improved thermal and acoustic insulation, all contributing to the high quality and comfortable family home.
